White House press secretary Sean Spicer resigned this morning after President Donald Trump named a new White House communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, a wealthy New York financier. According to sources, Spicer was asked to stay on as press secretary, but Spicer told Trump that hiring Scaramucci was a mistake and that he was resigning.
Spicer had a tumultuous sixth-month stay at the White House as the chief spokesman for an administration in constant controversy. We’ve had a surplus of inaccurate claims, tweets, memes, and SNL skits highlighting his journey. Here’s my favorite to send Spicey off with a bang!
In case you missed it, Beyoncé shared a long awaited photo of her newborn twins Sir and Rumi. She was wearing a similar veil and standing in front of a similar wreath she used to announce her pregnancy back in February. Given the symmetry between the images, people are saying the photographer Awol Erizku—who shot her pregnancy announcement photos, also shot Sir and Rumi’s Instagram debut as well. The photo went viral on Instagram and Twitter…
If you know me, you know that I love Celine Dion. This past week she dominated the Billboard Music Awards, singing her famous love song, “My Heart Will Go On”. She brought the crowd to tears in celebration of the movie’s 20-year anniversary, literally looking like an angel.
In light of the horrific Manchester attacks, Celine took a moment at her Las Vegas residency show at Caesars Palace to pay tribute and support to the U.K. city. The message was clear, “Manchester, we are with you.” She asked those in attendance to join hands for a moment of silence for those who lost their lives, as well as those affected by the attack.
It’s been over 25 years since Celine released the award-winning title track of Disney’s 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast. This week she celebrated that milestone by performing the song she sang for the film’s 2017 live-action remake in concert for the first time. Wearing a stunning gown reminiscent of the one Belle wears, she then sang the touching song— as footage of the film played behind her.
It’s been quite the week for Celine Dion. She continues to be strong, talented, and beautiful; that’s why I love her!
Mother’s Day is only a few days away! Usually moms are gifted with cliché presents they don’t really want. Since we live in a modern age don’t waste your time on new cookware, homemade coupon books, or a picture frame with “mom” on it. Be the favorite child and buy her something she’s actually excited about, other than flowers and a card. Whether she’s into cosmetics, jewelry, or needs a little relaxation, here’s a few ideas for you!
The worst “luxury” festival of all time? The organizers of the Fyre Festival promised “two transformative weekends” on a “remote and private” island in the Bahamas that was “once owned by Pablo Escobar.” Ja Rule was one of the organizers. Kendall Jenner promoted it on Instagram. Festival-goers paid thousands of dollars for a taste of the lifestyle of models from their Instagram feeds.
However, none of that happened.
Guests arrived to find themselves staring at a chaotic festival site that looked more like a bad summer camp. Complete with shoddy beach accommodations and far from gourmet meals. Bands cancelled and pulled out last-minute. Eventually, the festival was cancelled, and attendees were sent home. But, predictably, that went about as well as you’d think. People got stranded at the airport, with little food or water. Because the event was cashless many people didn’t have funds to get to the airport. The festival has been slapped with two lawsuits and people are still creating memes about their “Hunger Games” experience, hoping they get a refund.
Moral of the story, don’t believe everything you see online!
They’re marching and protesting. All around the world people are rallying for the rights of women. Some are calling for an end to workplace violence and harassment, to promote pay equality, and to encourage diversity and inclusion of women.
Everyone is wearing red. Organizers are urging men and women to wear red today in solidarity with women worldwide.
People are reaching out. Some are calling senators and demanding support for women’s rights, others are looking for small forms of support and acknowledgment such as smiling at a fellow woman on the street.
“Day Without a Woman”. This national strike movement aims to draw attention to inequities working women face compared to men, from wage disparity to harassment to job insecurity. Women are encouraged to avoid shopping for the day- unless they are spending money at businesses owned by minorities and women.
Every March, people around the world celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women as they remember the fight for women’s rights. This year, the day comes during a controversial political environment, where protesters have turned out in force to voice disagreement with the new administration’s policies and President Donald Trump’s rhetoric, especially regarding women’s issues. Celebrities, politicians and the general population are voicing their thoughts on social media to spread awareness of today. This International Women’s Day lets honor the brave and brilliant women whose lives and accomplishments have inspired the globe to reach higher, work harder, and dare to do the impossible!
“Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.”
In case you live in a cave and missed the 89th Academy Awards last night, here is a recap of what you missed.
1) Faye Dunaway announced the wrong winner for best picture
You’ve probably seen it all over social media today. The cast of “La La Land” got on stage. Then after an awkward interception, they announced that “Moonlight” really won. It was awkward, funny and slightly embarrassing.
2) Jimmy Kimmel Hosted
He wasn’t afraid to make a few political digs and threw shade at some of the stars in the room, helping to keep the night entertaining. One of my favorite moments was when he prompted a standing ovation for Meryl Streep’s 20th nomination, ending with “We’re going to have fun tonight. I hope we’re going to have fun tonight”…
3) Gary from Chicago
Kimmel brought a tour bus of unsuspecting “regular” people into the Oscars, and one man and his wife stole the show. Denzel got up and “married” them and Jennifer Aniston gave them a wedding present, all while taking lots of selfies.
4) Kimmel and Matt Damon continued their feud
If you don’t know about this “feud”, you can catch up here. Kimmel poked at Damon throughout the show, and you could tell he really enjoyed it. He started with, “I’ve known Matt for a long time. When I first met Matt, I was the fat one.” Later on in the show he added, “He handed what turned out to be an Oscar-caliber role over to his friend and made a Chinese ponytail movie instead,” Kimmel said. “And that movie, ‘The Great Wall,’ went on to lose 80 million dollars. Smooth move, dumbass.” All in good fun?
5) Notable wins and acceptance speeches
Throughout the night there was few memorable wins. Kevin O’Connell won his first Oscar after 21 nominations. He won for his work on “Hacksaw Ridge” and dedicated the award to his mother. Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor. His speech was charming. He thanked his teachers as well as his wife, who just gave birth to their daughter four days ago. “The Salesman” director Asghar Farhadi, didn’t attend, but won the best foreign language film. In the speech delivered on his behalf he said: “My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of other six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the US. Dividing the world into the ‘us’ and ‘our enemies’ categories creates fear. A deceitful justification for aggression and war. These wars prevent democracy and human rights in countries which have themselves been victims of aggression.” The crowd burst into applause.
Oh, and we found out that Nicole Kidman doesn’t know how to clap…
If you are looking for the perfect ski town look no further than Whistler, British Columbia. There’s enough terrain to keep you riding for a week (if your body can handle it). After a full day on the slopes, you can indulge in the many different après-ski options and cute restaurants in the picturesque downtown village. There’s over 200 marked runs, 8,171 acres of terrain, 16 alpine bowls, three glaciers, and the mountain receives on average 461 inches of snow annually.
One of the best parts of the trip was riding the Peak 2 Peak Gondola. It holds world records for the longest free span between rope way towers—1.88 miles and highest point above the ground 1,430 feet…
A glimpse into my winter wonderland trip to Whistler xo
This past weekend, approximately 3.2 million women and men marched to show their support for women’s rights. Marches happened all across the globe just a day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration. The women’s march was much more peaceful than the protests during Friday’s inauguration. This video shows the massive crowds that gathered.
The message of the participants this weekend was clear: this is just the beginning. Women’s groups plan to keep the momentum going post march. This weekend’s activities were an important cultural moment in history that showed people can be united and empowered. But there is still a long road ahead. Being a feminist today has become somewhat “trendy”, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Personally, I think it’s helping to spread the feelings and beliefs that many people share. Women should have the right to choose what’s appropriate for their bodies, have access to the health care systems, be treated equal to men, and to show unity with individuals around the world who are also frustrated. I hope that this march creates a movement that lasts longer than a four-year presidential term.
To end on a high note here is Madonna dropping a causal three f-bombs on live t.v. during the Women’s March in Washington D.C.
If you watched the 74th Golden Globes last night you saw who was honored the best in film and television in 2016 and the hottest looks of the red carpet. But the real highlight of the night was when Meryl Streep accepted the Cecil B. DeMille award for a lifetime of notable work in the industry. The legendary actress used her spotlight to make a not so subtle attack on US President-elect Donald Trump…
“There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good, there was nothing good about it, but it was effective and it did its job. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.” (referring to this video)
Meryl was of course criticized by some for her choice to bring politics to the awards show, but the room full of celebs laughed and applauded her speech, as well as many praising her on social media. In my eyes, her speech made her even more iconic. Slay!
If you’re looking for a good read in the lull between Christmas and the New Year, I have just the book for you…
The Woman in Cabin 10by Ruth Ware is a twisted thriller, that will keep you guessing throughout. The book starts with anticipation when the main character, travel journalist Lo Blacklock gets burgled at her London flat. The start of the novel will have you hooked before you’re taken onto a week-long luxury cruise in the Norwegian waters where a mystery unravels during the journey. Without giving too much detail away, this book reminds me of a mix of Gone Girl and Girl on a Train. It’s an easy read that is suspenseful till the very end! Enjoy!
